Clarification of "Student Driver" sign requirement

4 November 2014

Driving schools or institutes that teach practical training in Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 driver training vehicles must display — on the vehicle — the words "Student Driver", as set out in 27.09(1)(d) of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations.

Here are the signage requirements:

Signage requirements for vehicles used for driver training
Vehicle type Signage requirements
Class 1 – 5 Display the words "Student Driver".
Private vehicles (with modified controls) used for training people with disabilities who wish to obtain a Class 5 or 7 driver's licence Display both the words "Student Driver" — and an "L" sign (new driver sign).
Class 6 (motorcycle) No signage required.
Vehicles used for retraining of licensed drivers No signage required.

To clarify, displaying an L sign (new driver sign) issued by ICBC does not meet the specific signage requirements set out in Division 27 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations.
