ICBC has streamlined the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) approved course completion requirements.
New drivers in the GLP Learner stage who successfully complete an ICBC Approved Driver Education Course and submit a course completion document (Declaration of Completion) at the time of taking their Class 7 road test may be eligible to receive a 6-month reduction of the GLP Novice stage. They would be able to take the Class 5 road test after 18 months of Novice stage experience instead of 24 months if they also remain free of violations and at-fault crashes during the first 18 months of their Novice stage.
It is no longer mandatory for new drivers taki ng an ICBC Approved Driver Education Course to complete a Driver Experience Log of 60 hours of practice time. It is now voluntary, as it is for all other new drivers in GLP. As a result, schools and students no longer need to indicate on the course completion document that 60 hours of practice has been completed. Instructions have been provided to schools to remove reference to the Driver Experience Log when completing and issuing a Declaration of Completion.
While it is no longer mandatory for new drivers taking an ICBC Approved Driver Education Course to log driving practice, obtaining as much practice as possible and using the Driver Experience Log will help students prepare for the mid-course and final competency assessments that are key components of an ICBC Approved Driver Education Course. Schools may not issue a Declaration of Completion until a student has met the required competencies.
ICBC will continue to provide Driver Experience Logs as part of the GLP Learner Toolkits, and publications including RoadSense for Drivers will continue to encourage all new drivers to obtain practice in order to develop the skills and gain the experience needed to pass the road test and build the foundation for life-long safe driving.
