Types of driver certification facilities

Before applying to become a driver certification facility, it is helpful to understand the types of facilities authorized by ICBC.

There are three types of certification facilities:

Commercial vehicle certification facility

Commercial vehicle certification facilities can only train and certify drivers that are employees of the facility. This type of certification allows companies to certify their employees for Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or air brakes.

This type of facility cannot charge for its services.

Air brake certification facility

This is a licensed driving school authorized by ICBC to conduct air brake assessments — includes 16 hours of theory and four hours of practical assessment.

This type of facility can charge drivers a fee to take this program.

Motorcycle skills certification facility

This is a licensed driving school authorized by ICBC to conduct motorcycle skills assessments.

This type of facility can charge drivers a fee to take this program.
